Ramayan is one of the largest ancient epics in the world. It consists of nearly 24,000 verses that are divided into seven kandas (episodes).
The epic, traditionally ascribed to the Maharishi Valmiki, narrates the life of Lord Ram, the legendary prince of Ayodhya city in the kingdom of Kosala. The epic follows his fourteen-year exile to the forest, urged by his father, King Dasharath, on the request of Lord Ram's stepmother Kaikeyi; his travels across forests in the Indian subcontinent with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, the kidnapping of Mata Sita by Ravan—the king of Lanka—that resulted in war; and Ram's eventual return to Ayodhya to be crowned king amidst jubilation and celebration.
Each and every verse of Srimad Valmikiya Ramayan contains the divine fragrance of the divine qualities of God, truth, harmony, mercy, forgiveness, gentleness, patience, seriousness, knowledge, might, wisdom, devotion to the Guru, friendship, compassion, compassion for the surrendered.
