According to the Samudra Manthan episode mentioned in Mahabharat, Lord Vishnu appeared as an enchanting beauty known as Mohini. After the Devas and Asuras churned the Kshir Sagar or the Ocean of Milk, a pot of Elixir of Immortality or Amrita emerged from the ocean. The Asuras and Devas started to fight over it and gradually the weakened Devas started losing. Lord Vishnu then took Mohini avatar to trick the Asuras into giving the amrita away to the Devas.
The legend of Mohini Avatar appears in several scriptures like Mahabharata, Ramayana, Vishnu Puran, Bhagwat Puran and Brahmand Puran.
महाभारत में वर्णित समुद्र मंथन प्रकरण के अनुसार, भगवान विष्णु मोहिनी के नाम से जाने जाने वाले एक आकर्षक सौंदर्या के रूप में प्रकट हुए थे। जब देवों और असुरों ने क्षीर सागर का मंथन किया, तो उसमे से अमृत कलश निकला। इस पर असुर और देव युद्ध करने लगे और धीरे-धीरे कमजोर देव हारने लगे। भगवान विष्णु ने तब मोहिनी अवतार लिया और उन्हें अमृत कलश देवों को देने के लिए चल करना पड़ा।
मोहिनी अवतार की कथा महाभारत, रामायण, विष्णु पुराण, भागवत पुराण और ब्रह्माण्ड पुराण जैसे कई शास्त्रों में प्रकट होती है।
